Sterling McCall Acura can help you identify why your vehicle shakes when idling.
As a driver, one of the most uneasy feelings is when you notice your car vibrate when driving. Is it a nail in the tire, did a pothole hurt my car suspension, or did I break the driveshaft? There are several parts that may be the culprit as to why your vehicle is shaking, and the amount of the potential damage can vary greatly. The most common cause of the vibrating usually occurs in the vicinity of your car’s tires and wheels. They connect the vehicle to the road, and if anything is a bit wonky, will notice. On a serious note, it might be a broken transmission mount or a broken caliper. These more major component failures might leave you stranded on the side of the road.

If you got different wheels and tires recently, your vehicle vibrating could be caused by the tires not getting balanced correctly. Tire balancing ensures the tire and wheel weight is. So, if you feel the tire vibration when you are driving, it could very well be an unbalanced tire. If the tires are balanced, but your car is still vibrating, ensure the tires are inflated to the proper air pressure, and make sure the lugnuts are fully tightened and make sure the tire pressure is correct. If you find that your tires are causing the vibration, you should get them checked out immediately.
If your car shudders when you brake, that is a pretty good indicator that you need to have your brakes looked at. The most obvious reason for your steering wheel shudder is warped rotors. When drivers push down on the brake pedal, pieces of metal called brake pads squeeze the brake rotors to stop your car. A smooth brake rotor surface provides smooth braking. A warped surface will cause shudders when braking, like how a brick road feels rougher than a highway. Other causes of the vibrating include frozen calipers or damaged suspension components. If you notice your steering wheel start to wobble, bring it in to get it inspected.
If a car is shuddering before you even start driving, then you likely have broken parts. The most common causes of a vehicle shaking in idle are:
Worn Driveshaft – If damaged or not perfectly balanced, it could be the source of the vibrations
CV joints That Have Gone Bad – Working together with the drive shaft, cv joints get the engine power to the wheels and tires and, if they are failing, can be the cause of the car shaking in idle.
Engine Mounts That Are Failing – As the name indicates, these components help secure the engine to the car. If they get broken or damaged, it can let the engine move around under the hood.
